5 On A String

Vancouver, BC

5 On A String 5 on a String has been picking and singing bluegrass music around the Pacific Northwest for over twenty-five years. They have a family friendly show with plenty of hot picking and fiddle tunes to entertain just about any audience. Over the years the band has collected a large volume of songs and instrumentals in the bluegrass style so audiences are sure to get their toes tapping and hands clapping…Guaranteed. The band focuses on traditional bluegrass music but includes country and rock influences from time to time.

The band began playing as “5 on a String” back in 1989, when Gordie and Garry got together with other musicians to share songs and jam informally. Dan replaced the original bassist shortly after the band’s formation. One thing lead to another and before long they were invited to play at some of the region’s most prominent Bluegrass Festivals, including Darrington, Blueberry, Wintergrass, and Chilliwack.

When, after 16 years with the band, founding member Carrol Oldenburg (mandolin) decided to move on, multi-instrumentalist and lead singer Tim Eccles agreed to take the mandolin spot. A year later, Vancouver fiddle player Hugh Ellenwood enlisted after the retirement of Val Dean, 5 on a String’s original fiddler. Band spokesman Garry Stevenson says, “It’s been wonderful to perform all across B.C., Alberta, and Washington over the years and the friends, fans, and relationships we have shared are priceless to us. We hope that we can bring our brand of high-energy music to a venue near you soon.”
